Evaluation of Permeable Pavement Systems for Removing Heavy Metals from Stormwater

چکیده

This study examines a modified permeable pavement system (PPS) for enhanced heavy metal attenuation from stormwater. A laboratory model consisting of six PPS columns has been tested under varying rainfall intensities. The structures are arranged based on the following hypotheses enhancing attenuation: (i) addition natural zeolite layer in subbase promoting by adsorption and ion exchange; (ii) bark chip as an organic carbon source biosorption metals; (iii) maintaining saturated zone order to maintain required humidity level decrease oxygen increased biodegradation; (iv) inclusion thin sand layers restrict transport create anoxic enhance filtration. Successful treatment metals such Ba, Co, Mn, Ni, Zn observed various conditions using conventional PPS. intensity greatly influences Al, Cr, Cu, Mo Sr. During rains through structure, chromium is found be leached back into infiltrate. results indicate that changing material setting, can encouraged structure. this suggest structure amended adding its region, donor attenuation. Compared proposed reduces Cr desorption improves Cu Mo.

Permeable pavement and stormwater management systems: a review.

Uncontrolled stormwater runoff not only creates drainage problems and flash floods but also presents a considerable threat to water quality and the environment. These problems can, to a large extent, be reduced by a type of stormwater management approach employing permeable pavement systems (PPS) in urban, industrial and commercial areas, where frequent problems are caused by intense undrained ...

Factors Influencing Stormwater Mitigation in Permeable Pavement

Permeable pavement (PP) is used worldwide to mitigate surface runoff in urban areas. Various studies have examined the factors governing the hydrologic performance of PP. However, relatively little is known about the relative importance of these governing factors and the long-term hydrologic performance of PP. This study applied numerical models—calibrated and validated using existing experimen...

Base-Treated Juniper Fiber Media for Removing Heavy Metals in Stormwater Runoff

The viability of base-treated juniper fiber (BTJF) media for removing toxic heavy metals (Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn+) in stormwater runoff was investigated. The sorption ability ofthe BTJF for all metals was much higher than that of untreated juniper. The affinity sequence of both materials, BTJF and untreated juniper, was Pb > Cu > Zn:,. Cd. This order is explained by the hydrolysis constants for e...

Retention of heavy metals by stormwater filtration systems: breakthrough analysis.

Biofiltration systems are widely used to mitigate the impacts of stormwater on receiving waters, however their long-term capacity to retain heavy metals has not previously been assessed. Accelerated-dosing laboratory experiments were used to assess the likelihood of breakthrough occurring for three different types of soil-based filter media that are commonly used in stormwater biofilters. In al...

Long-term stormwater quantity and quality performance of permeable pavement systems.

This study examined the long-term effectiveness of permeable pavement as an alternative to traditional impervious asphalt pavement in a parking area. Four commercially available permeable pavement systems were evaluated after 6 years of daily parking usage for structural durability, ability to infiltrate precipitation, and impacts on infiltrate water quality. All four permeable pavement systems...
